A self-proclaimed birthday-zilla, actually I think I’m a renowned birthday-zilla at this rate, I LOVE my birthday (and currently, gifs)!
So, I thought what best way to celebrate my birthday by counting 24 lessons that I have learnt as I turn 24 today! Some were learnt the hard way, and some- some I’m lucky they came easy.
- Learn to say ‘NO’.
Its not the easiest thing for me to say ‘no’. Whether, it’s can you heat my coffee, or can you just do my assignment or can I walk all over you and you don’t say a word.
- You won’t know how strong you are until it’s the only option you have left.
The hardest thing for me to go through was losing my grandmother. I really loved her, and she was the most amazing person in the whole entire world. I know she’s watching over me and but sometimes, I really wish I could just put my head in her lap and make all the problems disappear.
- Don’t try to fit square pegs into round holes
I’ll be honest- I’m not the brightest person out there when it comes to science. I don’t understand physics and chemistry and I couldn’t bear the thought of studying it for another four years at university after putting myself through the torturous last two years at high school. When I decided to go for English Literature, except my parents everyone thought I was bonkers and wondered what kind of coffee will I be serving after. I stuck to my choice- and I couldn’t have been happier. I love literature- and while currently I’m working in PR- which is also a personal choice- I hope to write my own romance novels some day.
- Be less judgemental.
It’s a fault of mine- while I won’t say it out loud, I can be very judgemental inside that little brain of mine. I need to be kinder and very little judgemental.
- People will break your trust
And it will come from the person you’d never expect it to- but it’s okay. It will be a rocky few months, but you will trust again. Don’t let that be the stepping stone that defines you.
- Stop watching series that are boring
This is an actual lesson I’ve learnt. I’ve had a problem- that even if I don’t like something, I engage in it till the end. Whether it’s a TV show, movie or a series of books. Life’s too short to sit through the entire 2nd season on Gotham.
- Sometimes the right thing can be done by taking the easier path
Don’t always take the road less taken, especially when it’s too hard. It’s okay to take the easier path- especially if the outcome is going to be the same.
- Save money and spend it on Travel
We are living in a materialistic world – it’s so important to spend money on actual experiences that things.
- But it’s also okay to splurge on stupid things
You can travel with two pretty diamond solitaires hanging off your ears. Its okay.
You can eat all the salads you want, and do the 70% of the way to lose weight- but keep moving your body- it’s the best way to keep it from rusting!
- Send more flowers
Nothing brightens up somebody’s day more than flowers. Send flowers to your mum, best friends, grandma- anybody.
- Skip around the beach or garden or wherever
When we’re kids, skipping is the best mode of walking around. You should do it more often- without worrying how people are looking at you. Skip-running is the best!
- Treat others how you want to be treated
I never forget a birthday- mostly because forgetting my birthday would be a CRIME! But, in general, be nice and everyone will be nice to you.
- KARMA. KARMA. KARMA.
It has a way of coming back to you- so only send out good karma, and good will happen to you.
- Don’t believe everything you hear
I’m a very gullible person, and this has been a lesson learnt the VERY hard way. Listen to what everyone has to say- but process it thoroughly before saying it anywhere else.
- Be selfless
Within the limit- I tend to go overboard with that sometimes- not my brightest moment.
- Be a little selfish, too.
You really should spoil yourself more and do more things that make you happy- not because they make somebody else happy.
- Save your sorries
While it’s always good to apologise and accept your mistake- it isn’t the done thing when it’s not your mistake. Stop apologising for other’s mistakes.
Read whatever you want- as long as you enjoy the genre- read it.
- Step away from the digital world
Take a little detox every now and then- even if it’s for 2 hours- just step away- read a book, take a bath- don’t share it with the world.
- Be yourself
Some people are pricks and get off on making others feel bad about being themselves. Screw that- if you talk a lot, keep yapping, if you like pink- well, you like pink then. And if you love your birthday- well you love your birthday. Besides, always remember the people who care about you wouldn’t change you for the world.
- Stop living in the future
This is a serious problem I suffer- I need to learn to stay in the now and not keep planning the future. Live in the now
- Breathe and know it will get better
It’s happened and it’s not your fault. You shouldn’t be saying sorry, you shouldn’t be feeling bad- it won’t go away within a day or two, it will take time. Just keep breathing.
- Be there for the friends who’d always be there for you
Time and again, I’ve seen who my real friends are. They’ve stood by me through plenty and made me stronger. Let them know that you’ll always be there for them, like they’re there for you.
